Why Not New Zealand Native Timbers?

It is a common question: why look across the Tasman when New Zealand has its own rich timber history?

The reality comes down to botany and scale. New Zealand’s iconic native species, such as Rimu, Matai, and Kauri, are beautiful softwoods and medium-density hardwoods. While stunning for interior joinery, they lack the extreme mechanical density required to achieve a Class 1 natural durability rating. They simply cannot guarantee a 40 plus year lifespan in fully exposed, harsh external conditions.

Furthermore, New Zealand’s remaining native forests are rightfully protected. Any local native salvage is highly fragmented, completely reliant on ad-hoc demolition events, and strictly limited to indoor decorative applications.

In contrast, Australian eucalypts evolved to withstand harsh climates, including cycles of heat and drought. Their natural density and resilience make them a practical choice for structural use and external cladding.

The Resurrection Process

  3. Precision Re-Sawing (Revealing the grain) The weathered, outer industrial skin is milled away, breaking the timbers down into workable, straight commercial feedstock sizes.
  4. Architectural Profiling (Final shaping) The fresh feedstock is run through state-of-the-art profiling machinery to create exact shiplap cladding dimensions, external decking profiles, or smooth interior linings.
  5. Biosecurity and Conditioning (MPI Compliance) Before entering New Zealand, the timber undergoes strict thermal conditioning and biosecurity checks to ensure absolute compliance with Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) regulations.

The Aesthetics of Provenance
